I will be going to work as a laborer in a cooling tower at a Nuclear Power Plant in a couple weeks. My union boss doesn't seem to know anything beyond that. What type of work can I expect to be doing?

Do you know what a cooling tower is? Its job is to cool the water that flows through the Condenser of the turbine. The water in the condenser turns the steam, from the turbines back into into water. The condenser water has now picked up the heat from turning the steam back into water. That cooling water, which is now very hot, is now on its way to the cooling tower,to get cooled. The hot water is cooled by spraying the water from jets mounted inside the tower, together with an up draft of air, the water is cooled and falls into the bottom of the cooling tower, where a large pool of condenser water lays, and is continually recycled back to the turbine condensers. And the cycle begins again.
Cleaning the cooling tower will take place, only when the tower is shut down. There will be several towers.
Cleaning will involve climbing inside the cooling tower with possibly high pressure hoses, and brushes to clean off the residue on the cooling sprays pipes, sprayers them selfs. From the top to the bottom. Don't go into the tower by your self. You may have to drain the 'Pool" at the bottom of the tower, to clean that "Pool"water holding area.

Good luck it can be slippy inside those towers.

I know the basics of a cooling tower thanks to Google. I had done some research. I just wasn't sure what type of work would be typical of a laborer having to go inside of one & all my Union guy could tell me was that we'd be working in Cooling Tower{s}. He's a bit out of it & relatively new at his job. But in any case, I appreciate the knowledge. Thanks a lot.
