Order of the Garter

I have in my possession a baton which indicates George IV and the Most Noble Order of The Garter. I also have a sword which seems to belong to the regalia. These have been handed down through my family. However, I can not find anyone in my family that might have been a member of the garter save the Carr (Kerr)and Osborn side. Sir Robert Kerr 1614 along with a long list back to Sir Lord Andrew Kerr, during the reigns of the IV and V James, created Baron 1480 and knighted 1543. We also have Sir Peter Osborn, created first baronet in 1661. My grandmother told me that we were also related to Sir Francis Drake. Whatever the case, I can find no connection to the George IV baton and have concluded that we have nothing to do with it..

And my question: What was this baton used for and where? I can find no answer to this question
