I am interested in finding out the family history of my Dutch ancestors in Sumatra. All I know is that my ancestors the van Weine family or Weine had a plantation in Sumatra. I do not know what type of planatation they had. What type of employment was given to the native Sumatran's on their plantation? I am hoping to find that they were given payment for their work however I read in an article on the internet that slavery was abolished in 1863 in the Dutch East Indies.
If anyone has information on the van Weine or Weine plantations could they email me please whether it is good news or bad ( as in the treatment of the native Sumatrans on their plantations.
There is a story about my great great grand father who may have been born in Amsterdam in 1830 under the name Johanus Weg. he joined the Dutch Navy and jumped ship in Sumatra. He hide from the Dutch Navy and Government by changing his christian name to John also changing his surname to his mother's maiden name Weine. He stayed with relatives The Weine family or van Weine family on their plantation for a while before coming to Australia.
He was able to find work as a Bullock teamer driver on the goldfields of NSW as well as marrying an Australian women of English born parents. John and his wife had a large family. He died at Hill End which was a large at the time. goldmining town.

Hello,
I have traced the Weine family name back to Otto John or John Otto in Hill End in NSW and I am fascinated by coming across your posting as my grandfather always said that the family name was Dutch and they came via the east indies.

How are you related to the Weine family? My great grandmother was Lydia Harber (nee Weine) christened at Kelso near Bathurst in 1865 died Sydney 1941. Her parents were Ann Weine ( nee Hartley ) and John Otto Weine.
Lydia married Elias Harber in 1882 in St Peters Church Cooks River in Sydney. Their daughter Gladys May Harber is my grandmother. She married Allen Roy Hamilton in 1932 in Ashield Sydney.

Jennifer,
My name is Grant Kingsley Weine..... & I am descendant from John Otto Weine who was buried in Hill End in NSW. My father's name was Warren & my grandfather Frank who apparently was a bit reclusive within the family. However the stories which were religiously told me as a boy were exactly as you've mentioned, however i remember less detail as my Father died when I was 3 & my Grandfather when I was 14, I am now 42. My family history has always been a mystery to me as the story tellers passed on when i was very young, I would love to know more.
I understand that there was to be a reunion / meeting of the Weine family in Hill End last month, however it was cancelled at the last minute due to the organizer falling ill health. My mother Joan Weine & Aunty Roslyn Weine had planned to attend. Unfortunately I live in Shanghai, China currently with my new wife. Actually Lisa from the conversation trail recently contacted me via facebook, however facebook is now blocked, so apologies Lisa if you're reading this as I've been unable to login. my email address is grant.weine@gmail.com & I am just as hungry for information as both of you.

P.s. There is also a story about the night that our Great Great Grandfather was approached late over campfire in the goldfields of NSW by Bill Hall who was supposed to be one of NSW's most notorious outlaw's. Apparently he was on the run from the NSW Police & was just interested in sharing company, the fire & a meal for the night.
