It is commonly believed that the New Deal did not end the Great Depression. The unemployment rate rose sharply in 1937 - 4 years after New Deal programs began in 1933.
We cannot know if the downward slide which began in 1929-1930 would have been worse without the New Deal - but the evidense suggests that it was World War II, not the New Deal, that ended the Great Depression.

If World War II ended the Great Depression, then were the processes by which the war did so made enduring by the creation of the Cold War?
May we derive our entire high standard of living from war and the threats of war?

Great answer, The new deal did worsen the depresion and President Obama is doing the same thing now. I just hope this time a world war will not be the result.
