Sir Hugh Beaver, who was then in charge of the Guiness Brewery, got the idea in May 1951 when he got into an argument over which was the fastest game bird in Europe. He found that he could not find the information in any reference book, and conceived of the idea of writing a book of such information which could be used to settle pub disputes.

Norris and Ross McWhirter compiled the first Guinness Book of World Records in 1954.
