Hi!,
Can anyone help me out with info, etc, on 'J' Battery Royal Horse Artillery during the Boer War 1899-1902 Please!
My gt-uncle John Charles Maddock (Army number 5544) was a Gunner during the Boer War with 'J' Battery. I'm trying to find what Battles, etc, it was in?

Hi Joshua1980, My Grandad (GD) was a gunner in J Battery RHA and converted to RHA Mounted Rifles. The Battle he describes most vividly took place on 31.03.1902. It is variously known as the Battle of:- Boschbult, Bakspruit, Brakspruit, Hart's Farm or Hart's River. By then GD was in the RHAMR and commented on being in the strange position of defending RHA guns. Evidently the Officer got the wagons into a semi-circle with a spruit (ie steep sided dry river valley) as the 'diameter'. This defended the 'rear' fairly securely. The Boers surrounded our troops and made three main charges. On the last they got to within 200 yards before the rifle barrage was so intense they retreated. Our troops then dug in expecting the Boers to return at night. Evidently they had had enough. The Battle has variously been described as a 'British' or Boer victory. Kitchener arrived with reinforcements next day.
I use the term British as Australian, South African and Canadian troops were also involved.
Hope this is of use. All the best, Ian
