Does anyone know where Burton Rd in Oakville got it's name? My great grandfather Isaac Burton used to have a farm in Oakville and I was told that the street was named after him or one of his brothers who also farmed in Oakville.
I do not know if this is true.

Thanks

That could be true, I know they do such things in other places.

I just saw your query - I am trying to trace family of Isaac Burton and more importantly family and dates concerning my grandfather Robert Burton. Robert was the brother of Isaac, and I would be interested in finding out his birthdate and birthplace so that I can confirm the date I have and birthplace of Robert.
I met Isaac as a little girl, but do not remember meeting his wife Jessie. Robert lived on the Lakeshore Rd., Oakville - between Oakville and Bronte. He had 8 daughters and 3 sons.My father James was one of his sons. John was another. John had a farm where Burton Rd. now is. When John subdivided his farm in probably the 50's he named one of the roads after himself (or his father ) Patricia Ave. is named after me. My father James had most of property between Appleby College and Lady Baillee estate, on the lakeshore. The old Robert Burton homestead is still there (remodeled) as is my homestead (a red brick 1 1/2 storey on the highway).
I do not know where your great grandfather lived - I only know that it was close by, as I heard stories of various family members visiting back and forth. I believe the family moved farther away later , as I don't remember seeing or hearing of him or his family in later years.
I would welcome any information on your family, especially on the birthdate and birthplace of your great grandfather Isaac.

Hello Pat, I was so excited when I saw your message today. I had to read it several times to absorb it! My name is Jim Burton. It appears that we are second cousins and my grandfather and your father were first cousins. I remember my great grandparents very well as a child. I used to visit them when they lived in Oakville in the late 40's and early 50's. Isaac died in 1952 and his wife Jessie in 1954. Their son James Burton was my grandfather. He was born in 1888 in Langham, Norfolk, England and moved to Oakville, before his parents did when he was in his early 20's. I suspect that he stayed with his uncle Bob in Oakville who I think moved there earlier. My father was Warren James Budrton (1927-1994)My grandfather, James moved to the Beaches area of Toronto in the early 20's and worked for Steel Briggs. My dad was born in Toronto. We used to visit Oakville on a regular basis and I recall my great grandfather looking after the estate beside Appleby College, I think it was owned my a judge Schneider (sp?) of Hamilton. The judge was rarely there so we had the run of the place as kids. I was back there in 2005 to see what was left of the estate. Not much.
I have done a great deal of research on the Burton family and their roots and will gladly share all that I have. My tree is on Ancestry.ca and if you can provide me with your e-mail address, I will send you a link to it. The tree has over 16000 names and 2600 photos on it.
I am retired and living in Vancouver, BC. I have two brothers who live near Peterborough ( one is a Toronto Firefighter. I was an RCMP officer for 26 years before retiring, thats how I ended up out west. We just became grandparents for the first time 4 weeks ago.
I really hope you get this message and I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards
Jim Burton
