Edgar Allen Poe is considered a Dark Romanticist, though many of his best known works are Gothic in nature. Poe was known to dislike Transcendentalism. Much of his work deals with themes of death and the macabre.

Works such as "The Pit and the Pendulum" and "The Fall of the House of Usher" deal with themes of torture, madness, reanimation of spirits, destruction, and descent into oblivion. His poetry explores themes of loss, grief, and unquenchable yearning.

Much of Poe's work was catered to mass market tastes, and included popular contemporary concepts such as phrenology.
