Etymology


A memorable fictitious word most widely remembered for its use in the movie Mary Poppins (Walt Disney Studios, released 1964), and is also the title from a song in the movie. It is now a real word featured in the Oxford Dictionary. Some controversy surrounded the veracity of its origins when a lawsuit was brought upon Walt Disney Studios for copyright infringement in 1965. The claim, although proved false, was that word could be traced to to a 1949 song. Rumors persist as to the word's origins, nonetheless its authorship has now been definitively attributed to Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman, the Disney songwriters who wrote the movie songs.
