Etymology

From Germanic *hursaz (perhaps from a form *hrussa- ‘runner, racer’), from Indo-European *kers- ‘run’. Cognate with Old Frisian hors, Old Saxon hros (Dutch ros), Old High German hros, ros (German Ross), Old Norse hross (Old Swedish hors); and, outside the Germanic languages, with Latin currere ‘run, race’.
