Etymology

From West Germanic *biōr- from from . Akin to brēowan "to brew". An alternate source derives beer from a possible monastic Latin word biber ‘drink’, from Latin bibere ‘to drink’ (French boire etc.) though this is often disputed. Cognate with Old Frisian biār, Old Saxon bior (Dutch bier), Old High German bior (German Bier).
