avolition
  1. Lack of initiative or goals; one of the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. The person may wish to do something, but the desire is without power or energy.

Usage notes


This is not laziness. Avolition is a clinical term usually present as a comorbid symptom of another disease or as a side effect from medication. Schizophrenics are the most prominent case, where sufferers never have any desire to do anything like get a job or even go shopping.
