Etymology

Proto-Norse (runic) alu (ᚨᛚᚢ) is an important term of apparently magical significance in early runic inscriptions. Its etymology isn't entirely clear; while it is mostly connected with English ale (Common Germanic *aluþ), there are alternative suggestions, including connection to the root alh of Gothic alhs, Old English ealh "temple", Old Norse alh "amulet".
