History

The post-2006 Équateur province is itself a former province known as Cuvette-Centrale, having first separated from the former Équateur

 region in 1962. Léon Engulu served as the only president (later, governor) of Cuvette-Centrale from 1962-1966, when the province was reincorporated into the recreated Équateur province by the Mobutu regime.
