When he was born on the island of Haenam, in a place called “Ttangkkeut Maeul village” in South Jeolla Province, his father had already died in a marine accident. His mother, who has been the best model and supporter in his life, raised him by herself. Though his mother had really worked hard to get the best for him and his family, his family was very poor. It was very difficult to pay his tuition during his junior high school years, so his mother decided to work late at nights. This made him feel upset, but then a teacher proposed that his tuition would be waived if he joined the school wrestling team, so he joined without any reservation. Since he started wrestling, he was surprised to learn that he had a natural talent in the sport. As a high school student, he won the gold medal at the 1986 World Championship. Since he enrolled in Korea National Sports University (KNSU) in 1987, He has been a competitive athlete. During his college years, he had a successful career as a wrestler, and he won gold medals at the 1989 Asian Championship, the 1990 Beijing Asian Games, and the 1990 World Championship. After graduating from KNSU, he joined the Samsung Wrestling team. In 1992, he became a gold medalist at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Right after that, he retired and started his new career as a coach. In 2003, he was appointed as Head Coach of the Korea National Team and led Jung Ji-Hyun, a college student at the KNSU to win a gold medal at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics for the last decade. Currently, he has been coaching the Samsung Wrestling team and instructing young, competitive wrestlers who dream of winning a gold medal at Olympics.
