Vääna

Vääna is a village in Harku Parish, Harju County
in northern Estonia
. It has a population of 266 (as of 1 June 2010). Vääna is located appr. 20 km. from the capital Tallinn
.
First mention of the village (Feyena) has been dated to 1325. In the village center is a Vääna manor, surrounded by a park. There are also ruins of Vääna vassal castle in the park. Nowadays the manor houses a Vääna kindergarten-elementary school (est. 1855), public library and public internet point.
In 1913 a narrow-gauge, military-purpose railroad connecting Vääna and Tallinn was opened. Its initial purpose was supplying forts and defensive positions of Peter the Great's Naval Fortress
, located in the vicinity of Vääna. In 1933 railroad was handed over to Estonian Railways and used for passenger transport, until the line was finally closed in 1959. There is still an old station building on the north-eastern edge of the village.
