 and win a three-way race for the 23rd District in the New York State Senate. He would go on to serve three terms before being defeated by then City Councilman Martin J. "Marty" Golden

 in 2002. As a result of his defeat, Gentile entered into the special election to fill the vacancy on the city council that resulted from Golden's victory; Gentile won the special election and has held the seat ever since. Effectively, the elections resulted in Golden and Gentile swapping seats.

Prior to his involvement in electoral politics Gentile was a prosecutor in the District Attorney
