The bat was discovered by Richard Van Gelder
, then curator of Mammalogy
at the American Museum of Natural History. He dubbed the bat "dubiaquercus" in honor of Oakes Plimpton, who doubted the newly-discovered bat was a different species (Quercus is Latin for "oak").
