. He used to say that if one women of family becomes educated his whole family becomes educated and cultured. Keeping this view in mind V.T.Patil established the Tararani Vidyapeeth for girls in Kolhapur in 1945.

Establishment of Tararani Vidyapeeth

SNDT of Kolhapur

Tararani Vidyapeeth, Kolhapur, came into existence on the Republic Day of 1953. Its founder member was V.T.Patil, who had ambitions before him of establishing an institution for the education of girls, particularly those belonging to the non-advanced classes. The Vidyapeeth (University) is named after Chhatrapati Maharani Tara Bai, the daughter-in-law of Shivaji Maharaj who founded the State of Kolhapur in 17th Century. Though the Vidyapeeth itself was inaugurated in 1953, its beginnings were made much earlier, namely in 1945, when a free middle school for girls, Tara Rani Vidya Mandir, was started in Kolhapur. In the first year of its existence it taught standards I to III and had on its register 39 girls only. It is out of this humble beginning that the Tara Rani Vidyapeeth of today has emerged into a leading education provider in Western Maharashtra state of India.http://www.tvjce.com/institute.htm

In order to provide up-to-date facilities for women's education the independent organization of the Tara Rani Vidyapeeth Trust was established. It is entrusted with executive work and consisted of 12 members in 1958 of which V.T.Patil was Chairman.

The Vidyapeeth today has five institutions working under its aegis, namely, (1) Usha Raje (Multi-purpose) High School; (2) Primary Teachers Training College for Women (D.Ed collge); (3) a Primary school; (4) a pre-primary school (Bal bhavan); (5) a women's welfare centre. It also conducts Tara Rani Mahila Vasatigriha (Hostel).http://www.maharashtra.gov.in/english/gazetteer/KOLHAPUR/voluntary_edu.html

Tararani Vidyapeeth is one of reputed educational institute in kolhapur city under the management committee of Tararani Vidyapeeth. It is famously known as shadow SNDT University of Pune. Today Tararani Vidyapeeth educates thousands of girls from standard 1st to Graduation level. Now ,there are approximately 3000 girls studying in this school.Taraani Vidyapeeth is one of the best institute in whole Maharashtra, which gives chance to every girl to prove her talent and capability. Not only the studying is focused, but also many other activities like sports-(volleyball,foot-ball,kho-kho,running,high jump, long jump hockey),music, drawing and painting and much more activities are included in this school. It is really a multipurpose school!

One day, Chhatrapati Rajaram maharaj said to his trusted people in the palace that, “ If anybody sets up the proper memorial of Tararani because of whom I am the Chhatrapati here , “I am prepared to surrender half portion of my princely state to him”. V.T. Patil remembered these words and instead of desiring the half portion of Chhatrapati’s estate he surrendered his own property to the trust and established the educational institution in the name of Tararani the Founder of Kolhapur State. Similar is the case of the Tararani Vidyapeeth where thousands of girls received higher education and some of them have attained the very high position in the public life and in other areas. In the beginning he founded a primary school named as Tararani Vidyamandir. To start with, there were only 22 girls studying in the primary and pre-primary school, but later on the number of Girls student reached thousand.http://www.tvjce.com/index.html

The education Society established in 1943 was registered as prince Shivaji education society and it is this society which started the Tararani Vidyamandir. Both Tararani Vidyamandir and Usharaje High School were established in 1945 and in 1951 he established D.Ed. College and in 1961 he started Kirti College at Kolhapur, Shivaji College at Gadhinglaj and in 1984 he started Kamala College in Kolhapur.

The motto of Tararani Vidyapeeth is to create Holly and Beautiful atmosphere for education. Therefore, V.T.Patil had very high expectations from his educational institution and he always kept this view in mind in developing his institution in different directions for upliftment of society.
