The People's Advocate was established by Edward John Hawksley, an English Catholic Radical, who wrote the majority of the paper's content, and by the Sydney printer Francis Cunninghame. http://oa.anu.edu.au/obituary/hawksley-edward-john-1546

Prior to this Hawkesley had edited and published the Sydney Chronicle (1846-1847) and then the Daily News, with James St Julian.
