The Great Escape II essentially picks up where The Great Escape leaves off, covering the last chapter of Paul Brickhill's book, The Great Escape, on which both movies are based. However, The Great Escape II is almost complete fiction (using only the names of the real people involved). This is in contrast to The Great Escape, where names were changed and composite characters were used - with the addition of some fiction for dramatic effect - but the story is essentially accurate.
