Education and early career

Hagströmer commenced studies in business administration at Stockholm University

 but did not graduate. His first job was with a minor finance company, before joining giant Investor AB

 in 1973. He stayed at Investor until 1981, when he founded his own stock broking firm, Hagströmer Fondkommission AB, the foundation of today's HQ Bank.

During the 1980s, he met Mats Qviberg, who at that time was a stockbroker at Carnegie Investment Bank

. In the referendum on the Euro in 2003, he actively supported the no side. At first Qviberg took the opposite view, but later changed his mind. Hagströmer served on the board of the Eurosceptic June List
