Adler was the focus of controversy in April, 2011 after he was accused of being behind the dismissal of David Fox, Reuters' Jakarta bureau chief, for a comment the latter inadvertently wrote in a Reuters only chat-room. Fox, who had worked for Reuters for 20 years, during which time he covered 35 wars for the company, was sacked without leave to appeal after he made a mildly sexual joke to a colleague in what he believed to be a private message. His attempts to have the offending comment removed and to apologise were rejected, causing anger among many journalists.
