History

St Bede’s school oppend in September 1976 as the first joint Anglican and Roman Catholic school in the world. The school later went on to allow pupils from the free churches to join. All churches are represented on the governing board, making it the world's only official fully ecumenical church school.

Builing works

Between 1988 and 1999 the school underwent large scale builing works to bring the school together on its present site, and to create new facilitys for a library, ICT and Careers. In 2004 a new Arts Centre was opened and in 2006 a sports hall opened.

In September 2011 an extention of the main building containing six new class rooms, which was build to replace the tempoary huts (which where in place due to part of the main building being removed due to structual reasons), was opened. Planning permision has also been granted for the construction of two small halls. Construction is due to begin in January 2012 with the building due to be complete by Easter time.

The school

As the only state-funded, fully ecumenical Christian comprehensive secondary school, it was founded by the Church of England Diocese of Southwark and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Arundel and Brighton. It also works in formal and close partnership with local Free Churches (Methodist, Baptist, United Reformed and many other "non-conformist" Churches). Its ecumenical outlook is reflected in its provision of chaplains from several denominational groups, regular assemblies and a dedicated chapel. RE is taught in denominations up to Year 9, and in years 10 & 11 GCSE Religious Studies (Christianity) is compulsory. As the school is a Christian school, most applicants to Key Stages 3 & 4 (years 7-11) must demonstrate commitment to a local church.
