uses a style similar to Pokémon video games. The player collects various spirits and battles against opponents with them. As with Pokémon games for the handheld systems, you must buy the other Shaman King GBA incarnation (Sprinting Wolf) if you wish to use all 177 collectible spirits. They can only be traded through GBA linking. When capturing wild spirits, the player throws an item known as a mortuary tablet. It is possible to capture a spirit when its health is at a low level. To win battles, the player must knock out each of the spirits under your opponent's control.

Asakura Yoh gains experience through battle, and eventually can merge two spirits together and thus become more powerful, as seen in Yu-Gi-Oh!
