Points were assigned based on the finishing position in each race (1 for first, 2 for second, etc.). If a sailor was disqualified or did not complete the race, 28 points were assigned for that race (one more than the number of sailors). The points were totaled from the best 9 results of the first 10 races, with lower totals being better. The top 10 athletes advanced to the medal race, where points counted double (2 for first, 4 for second, etc.). The athlete with the lowest total score won.
