In 1828 Samuel J. Moreland, son of a sawyer from Stroud, was born. He relocated, in 1867, to Gloucester, opening the Moreland Trade Factory (which still stands today), who were to produce Britain's iconic matches.

The builidng Moreland Trade Factory is located on Bristol Road. There have recently been major arguments on relighting the iconic England Glory sign, with residences even offering to pay for the operation of the sign (which has not been lit since the 70s) from their own pockets.

The iconic brand which the Morelands created has now spawned numerous pieces of work. For example, the England's Glory pub in Gloucester. Additionally, an electorate ward in Gloucester has been named after the family.
