. He married Madeleine Prinzessin zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg, daughter of Alfred Prinz zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg and Pauline Gräfin von Reichenbach-Lessonitz, on 21 November 1902 at Langenzell. He died on 25 April 1925 at age 42.

He is alternately known as Richard Prinz zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, or Richard 4th Prinz zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg.
