Recovery One. Burnie Burns has stated that the mini-series, in addition to shedding some more light on Project Freelancer, is also important in setting up a background for a new upcoming character.
With the exception of Mark Bellman, who voices the AI
, no voice actors from previous Rooster Teeth productions lent their voice talents to this series. Instead, the other three main characters were voiced by other actors who auditioned for the roles. The characters Washington, and Command were played by new actors Shannon McCormick, Shana Merlin and Lee Eddy respectively. Recurring character makes a cameo appearance in the first episode but does not have any dialogue.
Washington attends to North, the dead soldier whose suit put out the distress signal. There is also a female soldier named South at the scene. They are also Freelancer soldiers, named for North and South Dakota respectively. Through their conversation, it is revealed that North and South are twin siblings and that North's AI, Theta, is missing. South never received an AI; she was due to receive one when the incident involving Washington and his AI occurred, causing subsequent implantations to be cancelled. Washington receives an order from Command that the recovery of Theta is top priority and that the current situation is "Level Zero," and has to be contained. He hesitantly accepts the order, and appears to kill South with a pistol shot to her head.
However, he does not kill South, and realizes that she was only left alive in the first place to slow him down. He later explains to her that an unknown enemy is hunting down Freelancers and killing them, stealing their AIs and special armor upgrades. Washington purposely sets up an encounter to draw out the mystery assailant, explaining to South that he will need her help, as he cannot defeat the enemy on his own. So that Delta can assist in the upcoming battle, he needs to be implanted in one of the two soldiers. Owing to Washington's own misgivings about AIs, Delta is implanted into South. These misgivings are revealed to be a result of the supposed death of Washington's own AI, which is alleged to have committed suicide while its mind was synchronised with Washington's.
Washington and South move out to confront the enemy, but South shoots Washington in the back, telling an alarmed Delta that she is “stacking the deck in [their] favor”. She tricks the enemy into letting her leave, and steals a ship. South makes contact with Command, who identify her as Recovery Two. South tells Command that the plan to draw out the enemy was successful, that Washington was killed by the enemy, and that he had never suspected he was being double-crossed. She is ordered to return to base, so that she can be rated for implantation, but refuses, saying she already has her AI. Command warns South that they will find her, but South is not fazed, ending the transmission (and the mini-series) by saying, "It's not you I'm worried about."

Plot
The series opens at Omega's base from episode 5 of Out of Mind. Agent Washington - one of the 49 Freelancer soldiers named after the 49 remaining states in the U.S. - arrives at the scene and locates the dead body of York. Washington activates York's assigned AI, Delta, and begins the process of recovering and storing him. It is revealed that unlike most Freelancer operatives, Washington does not have an AI anymore due to complications with his previous one. Shortly afterward, he is attacked by Wyoming, but manages to escape with Delta intact.
