The pass is crossed by the Katschbergstraße (B 99), which connects Bischofshofen
with Sankt Michael im Lungau
. In the south the road continues across the Katschberg Pass
into Carinthia
. At the pass is the Obertauern
ski resort.
The road probably was already used by the Celtic Taurisci
tribe, it was rebuilt as a Roman road during the rule of Emperor Septimius Severus
from 193 onwards, leading from Iuvavum
(Salzburg) to Aquileia
.
A little to the west and 600 m. lower, the Tauern Autobahn
(A 10) crosses the Radstädter Tauern in the Tauern Road Tunnel
