Marie-Cécile and Friedrich August divorced on 23 November 1989. Friedrich August later remarried Countess Donata of Castell-Rüdenhausen, the wife of Marie-Cécile's deceased brother, Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia.

Marie-Cécile is in the line of succession to the British throne. Her son, and her son's children, as Catholics, are not, and so her elder daughter, Rixa, follows her in line of succession to the British throne, followed by her younger daughter, Bibiane.
