He served in the Tennessee House of Representatives
in 1848 and again in 1882. During the Civil War
, he served as commissary
with the rank of major
in the Confederate
service. He was elected as a Democrat
to the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses. He served from March 4, 1885 to March 3, 1889 and was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1888. He died in Ripley, Tennessee on October 9, 1902. He was interred
in Maplewood Cemetery.
