Michael Allen Nicholas (May 4, 1833 – May 31, 1905) was a U.S. Representative from New York State as well as mayor of Albany
, New York's capital. He was born in County Carlow, Ireland.
The Biographical Directory of the United States Congress http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=N000126 documents that he immigrated to the United States at the age of ten; attended the public schools in Albany; and later went to California during the gold rush without finishing a law degree. In California, he was employed on the street railway system of San Francisco and soon became manager. He returned to Albany where he worked as a brewer, became director of the National Savings Bank of Albany, and served as fire commissioner of Albany 1869-1878. He was mayor of Albany from May 1878 to June 24, 1883 and served in the Forty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1881-March 3, 1883). After his stint in public office, he continued his business activities and died in Albany on May 31, 1905. He is now interned at St. Agnes Cemetery
