Schäfer played for only three clubs in his club football career in Australia, for Blacktown

International career

He was a member of the Australian 1974 World Cup squad in West Germany and made his international debut in 1967 and was a fixture in the Australian side till his retirement at the end of the 1974 World Cup finals.

Schäfer represented Australia 73 times, scoring 1 goal. He played in all three of Australia's matches in the 1974 FIFA World Cup
