Juan Manuel Santos Calderón announced the resignation of Rodrigo Rivera Salazar
as Minister of National Defence and named Pinzón as his replacement. Pinzón who up until that point had served as the General Secretary to President Santos had also served as Deputy Minister of Defence for Strategy and Planning in the previous administration of President Álvaro Uribe Vélez. Pinzón was sworn in five days later on 5 September he was sworn in as the new Minister of National Defence.
