, served in the US Army (eventually becoming a first lieutenant) and received his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1994, he was hired by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office, where he worked as an assistant district attorney until 2007.

 announced that he would not run for reelection in 2006. Chisholm announced his candidacy, as a Democrat and was elected to a two-year term in the 2006 midterm elections. In 2008, Chisholm was reelected, this time for four years.

Chisholm is a board member of the nationwide Association of Prosecuting Attorneys and is a past chair of the Safe and Sound Milwaukee Board. He is also a commissioner on the Wisconsin governor's Racial Disparity Oversight Commission.

As district attorney, Chisholm and fellow prosecutors have developed a nationally recognized community prosecution system.
