, developed the crystallized and fluid theory of intelligence. This theory was later combined with the work of John Carroll

 and called the CHC theory. The CHC theory is the basis for many modern IQ tests.
In the final decades of his life, Dr. Horn was Professor of Psychology & Head of Adult Development and Aging University of Southern California

(1986 – 2006). Prior to that, Dr. Horn was Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Denver (1970-1986), Lecturer, Educational Psychology, University of California at Berkeley (1967), Research Associate at the Institute of Psychiatry, University of London, England (1972),Research Associate, Psychiatric Clinic, University Hospital, Lund, Sweden (1982).

He received numerous awards, including: Research Career Development Award, National Institutes of Health (1968-1972); Annual Prize for Distinguished Publications in Multivariate Psychology (SMEP) (1972); Lifetime Achievement Award, SMEP (1992). Horn also served as president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the American Civil Liberties Union.
