Project Promise

The Timilty is best known for the Project Promise program, started in 1986. As originally conceived, Project Promise extended the school day and reduced class sizes. As a result, the school went from one with failing test scores to one that was awarded the U.S. Department of Education's National Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence for the 1988-1989 and 1995-1996 school years.

Promising Pals

The Promising Pals Program pairs each of the approximately 700 middle school students with members of the greater Boston community. The student first writes to the adult, and the pair of pen pals go on to exchange hardcopy letters for the next several months. Near the end of the school year, the adult pen pals visit the school to meet their students during a school-wide brunch, also known as "Breakfast at Timilty."

The program has been in effect since 1986. Notable participants have included Boston City Mayor Thomas M. Menino.

AVID

The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program helps students prepare for college at a young age and is focused on students that are academically in the middle.

Boston Teacher Residency

Boston Teacher Residency is a master’s program in education that recruits talented, committed individuals of all ages and gives them the tools they need to make an immediate impact in the classrooms of the Boston Public Schools. Residents teach alongside a certified teacher for an entire academic year in conjunction with taking education classes for a teaching license.

SummerWorks

The SummerWorks program is a career exploration and summer employment program that offers graduating Timilty eighth-graders paid part-time internships at the Massachusetts General Hospital

 during summer vacation. Students can be placed in a variety of settings, ranging from administrative offices to research laboratories. During the course of the program, students also conduct team building activities, attend weekly workshops on employment and workplace topics, and offer a presentation of their experiences during a SummerWorks Showcase.

Science Fair

Each year, the Timilty holds a school-wide Science Fair in which every student is expected to complete an experimental science project. Students work individually or as part of a team over a period of a couple of months, and then present their final work during a week-long Science Fair attended by a group of volunteer judges from numerous community organizations, including the Massachusetts General Hospital

The Timilty Middle School Community is also located near several community resources with services directed towards its students.

Dudley Square Library

Timilty Middle School is also near the Dudley Square Library, which provides several services that support the Timilty community. Located within a ten minute walk from the school, the Dudley Square Library is staffed by child and teen literacy librarians who also provide and staff a dedicated literacy center which works with adults, children, and individuals with disabilities. The library provides weekly Homework Help on Mondays and Thursdays during the school year, which is overseen by a member of the Boston Teacher's Union. Timilty students interested in acquiring low-cost books of their own, especially for their “Independent Reading Book” are encouraged to attend the library's regular book sales. Librarians also host storytime and show films regularly on the premise. Dudley Square Library also provides non-traditional services such as internet access and a laptop borrowing policy. On Mondays the library provides cooking classes for teens, which focuses largely on the creation of sweets.

Yawkey Boys and Girls Club

Yawkey Boys and Girls Club is located approximately a ten minute walk from the Timilty Middle School and is open during the weekdays until six p.m., allowing students access to their premises after Timilty's extended school hours. The club features an art room, atrium, baseball field, Cadet room, cafeteria, climbing wall, Computer Clubhouse, education room, elevator, fitness center, games room, gym, music studio, outdoor basketball courts, outdoor play area, performing arts center, pool, ropes course, School Aged Child Care, and a teen Center/lounge. The Boys and Girls club provides opportunities for students to engage in physical activities including swimming, basketball and baseball under the supervision and training of dedicated staff. The Club hosts both boys and girls teams for multiple sports and programs such as Science Club. The club also collaborates with other non-profit services providers such as Math Power's Math*Stars program, which provides student tutoring in combination with recreational activities.

First Church of Roxbury

History: The oldest wooden church in Boston, this 1804 structure is the fifth meetinghouse on its sight since the first church was built in 1632. The architect, William Blaney, was a church member and housewright. The land around the church is a fragment of the original town common. Its most famous pastor was Reverend John Eliot (1604-1690), a missionary to the Algonquin Indians. Due to Eliot’s work, the First Church of Roxbury was one of only three churches in Puritan Massachusetts to admit Indians as full members. Source: The Boston Society
Building: In the summer of 1632, the first Meeting House in Roxbury was built with a thatched roof but without interior furnishings. A second structure was built in 1674, and pews were added in 1693. The third church, built in 1741, featured a corner where African-American slaves sat. The fourth church, built in 1746 was used as a signal station during the Revolutionary War. The fifth and present structure was built in 1804 and is the oldest standing frame church in Boston.

Earthworks

“EarthWorks Outdoor Classroom Program is a hands-on environmental education program based in small fruit orchards and gardens on urban school grounds. The program connects children to the natural world while making science relevant and exciting. EarthWorks helps more than 1,000 children each year master many of the concepts mandated by the Massachusetts and Boston Public School Science Frameworks and Curriculum Standards. The program aids classroom teachers in their science curriculum and creates confident, engaged and inquisitive learners.”

Youth Rap

Children’s Services of Roxbury

Children's Services of Roxbury (CSR) has a variety of social service programs that serve thousands of low-income children, families, and adults throughout Massachusetts each year. The programs, including foster care, adoption, parent mentors, family stabilization and support, Massachusetts Families for Kids, focus on strengthening, stabilizing, and supporting families and individuals. CSR also has a Youth and Police in Partnership program that "seeks to improve the relationship between inner-city youth, residents and the Police Department, and to address community problems."

Urban League

Located at 88 Warren Street, the Urban League has been a prominent organization in the Roxbury community. The principal goal of this organization is to provide programs and services, for African Americans and other persons of color that ensure their improved economic development and increased self-reliance. This goal is managed by creating a 4-point system that focuses on education and youth empowerment, economic empowerment, advocacy and civil rights empowerment and lastly partnerships and measurement. In addition, this organization assists families with developing a nurturing home for their children. Throughout these 90 years, the Urban League has implemented various programs and services such as Camp Atwater, Workforce Development, Empowerment Center and Technology to assist community members with obtaining their goals.

Haley House Bakery & Cafe

A nonprofit organization located at 12 Dade Street near Dudley Square. Since its inception, Haley House has provided its nearby community with great food, service and entertainment. It is also affiliated with the Haley House live-in community of volunteers who prepare meals for the soup kitchen to feed the homeless. Haley House was started in 1966 as a home for the homeless and expanded much later to include Haley House Bakery & Café to continue their belief of people helping people. Haley House Bakery & Café consists of several programs and services such as Take Back the Kitchen, Open Mic Nights through a partnership with Art Is Life Itself other programs through its’ partnership with Discover Roxbury.
