Judge Holderman enjoys teaching, and has taught classes at many Illinois law schools. He was an Adjunct professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law from 1981 to 1983, and at Northwestern University School of Law from 1982 to 1984. He was a Lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School from 1983 to 2000. Currently, he teaches as an adjunct professor at the John Marshall Law School, Chicago, Illinois (1986–present) and at the University of Illinois College of Law (1993–present).

Judge Holderman is particularly interested in intellectual property litigation, and teaches trial advocacy courses focusing on patent, trade secret, and copyright cases. He also teaches courses related to international IP rights and enforcement.
