Original Version

There are three versions of the track that have been released. The original version was released as a B-Side twice in the 1970s, once as a B-Side for their single "Ripples" (from "A Trick of the Tail

"), and again as a B-Side for "Your Own Special Way" (from the "Wind and Wuthering" album). The duration of the track was 5:46 and featured a simple vocal section in the first two minutes of the song, followed by an extended instrumental in the vein of Psychedelic Rock

 featuring sitar, backwards vocals, and meandering keyboards. The track came to an unfaded ending similar to the opening of the track Mad Man Moon on "A Trick Of The Tail". The track was later scrapped for the album, but still appeared as a reprisal in the last track on "A Trick Of The Tail", Los Endos

. Lacking a suitable opening for the studio version of the "Los Endos", part of "It's Yourself" was excerpted to open the studio version of the track. This short section is the only section of "It's Yourself" to have been played live, and only in 1976 as the introduction to "Los Endos".

, the track was faded out twenty seconds early, at the request of Tony Banks, who has said he didn't care for the ending. To date, this version is the closest any CD release has come to releasing the original version.

The third version was released as part of the 2007 Boxset "Genesis 1976-1982

", and was a completely new mix by Nick Davis in stereo and 5.1 surround sound. When Nick Davis was remixing the track, he discovered that an entire verse and chorus had been edited out of the original, and chose to restore them. Previously, this missing chorus was only available on a bootleg version of the track, entitled "Beloved Summer". Despite the addition of a verse, the track was once again faded twenty seconds early, presumably due to an error by Davis or mastering engineer Tony Cousins, who were both using the Genesis Archive 2 version as a guide. This version is the longest, lasting 6:15.
