He was the publisher of the monthly English Specialists' Journal which ran from 1895 to 1897 and of Ewen’s Weekly Stamp News from 1899.

According to Brian Birch, Ewen collected stamps at the age of ten and started his own firm, the H. L’Estrange Ewen company, on his thirteenth birthday.

In 1949 his collection of railway letter stamps for the period 1891 to 1912 with sheets, proofs, and covers was given to the British Museum
