Officially retired from stage and acting work in 2003, although he played leading parts in his wife Marie-Louise Ekman's two films "Asta Nilssons sällskap" (2005) och "Pingvinresan" (2005). In 2007, he directed the play "Gäckanden" for the Swedish Royal Dramatic Theatre (Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern) in Stockholm, so if he really is retired is a confusing question. Gösta Ekman won the Swedish film award Guldbaggen in 1993 for his role as policeman Martin Beck in the Guldbagge-winning film "Mannen på balkongen", based on the novel by Sjöwall and Wahlöö
