The firm was founded in San Francisco in 1974 by Stuart Gordon and Donald Rees, both of whom currently maintain active practices. In just over 35 years, the firm has grown from a small regional presence to national prominence. Gordon & Rees emphasizes litigation and business transactions and features over 30 separate practice areas and industry specializations.

Gordon & Rees’s continued national growth is evidenced by the firm’s rise to #154 on the 2010 AmLaw 200 list of the largest law firms in the U.S. Compiled annually by The American Lawyer, the list has noted Gordon & Rees’s consistent expansion since 2005 when the firm first appeared on the list at #176. Similarly, Gordon & Rees advanced from #144 to #132 in the National Law Journal's 2009 survey of the largest U.S. law firms. 2009 is the sixth consecutive year Gordon & Rees has advanced in the NLJ survey since first appearing on this list in 2003.
