G. S. Lakshman Iyer

G.S. Lakshmana Iyer was an Indian Freedom fighter from the city of Gobichettipalayam. Lakshmana Iyer underwent imprisonment for more than five years during India's freedom struggle. Former President R Venkataraman was believe to have been imprisoned along with him. He has been credited with having done a lot toward the improvement of the Gobichettipalayam community and personally set the example by donating 26 acres of land towards technical education for Adidravidas shortly after Indian Independence.
He was Gobichettipalayam's Municipal Chairman twice. When he was Chairman of the same Municipality in 1983, he banned the manual scavenging system and instructed house owners to construct toilets with septic tanks. For this, he was honoured by the then Union Government.
He died due to illness at the age of 93. Hundreds of local people paid their last respects to him.
