). FLCS was founded in 1960 by Mahamoud Harbi. Its founding president was Adan Abdulle. FLCS began armed activities inside Djibouti in 1968. FLSC mainly drew its support from the Iise clan.

The military struggle was actively supported by the government of Somalia

. FLCS was also supported by OAU as a national liberation movement. In the period 1971-1972 FLCS received 1500 pounds sterling from the OAU, 0.14% of the total amounts donated by the OAU to different African liberation movements at the time.
