on 30 May 2006. EJ and Sami's first meeting, which occurred on the same day, was a memorable moment. EJ, clothed in nothing but a towel, answered his door to find a drenched, flustered Sami, who was looking for a wrench that EJ had borrowed from her boyfriend, Austin Reed, earlier. The attraction between the handsome, charming Brit and Salem's resident bad girl was instantaneous and they quickly became good friends, despite her ongoing romantic relationship with Austin at the time. EJ, in accordance with his father's plans for him, keeps his true identity as Stefano DiMera's youngest son a secret from everyone around him.

Over that summer and the early course of their friendship, EJ and Sami shared a number of flirtatious exchanges and romantic moments. The most notable of these was their tango on the pier on June 16, a dinner at EJ's apartment on the night before Sami's wedding to Austin on August 16, and a romantic dance to the song "The Way You Look Tonight

" in an abandoned house on August 24, where they were waylaid while trying to get to the church for Sami's wedding to Austin. They shared their first kiss on August 22 when Sami mistook EJ for Austin as she awakened.

EJ also became Sami's sole support and confidante while she was blackmailed by a mysterious person who sent her a number of notes threatening to expose one of her recent misdeeds if she didn't comply with the notes' instructions. EJ encouraged her to tell the truth about what she'd done, but Sami resisted, saying that the fallout would be potentially devastating for her and her relationships with her loved ones. Ultimately, Sami was forced to dump Austin at the altar to satisfy the blackmailer's demands and keep her secret. During the aftermath of the aborted wedding, EJ supported Sami and revealed that he'd never believed that Austin was the right man for her. He tells her that she deserves to be with "somebody who loves you completely and absolutely for who you are, not who they want you to be or who they wish that you were."[2] When Sami received yet another blackmail note demanding that she give up custody of her son, Will

, to her ex-fiance, Lucas Roberts, EJ promised her that he would always be there for her and they shared a kiss.

Subsequently, EJ asked Sami out on a date and learned that Lucas moved in with Sami and Will to provide Will with a more stable family environment after he ran away from home. EJ and Sami's first official date was disrupted by Will and Lucas's pranks, which included cancelling their dinner reservations, sabotaging EJ's car, and planting a stink bomb in EJ's apartment. Unbeknownst to Sami, EJ sought solace in the arms of Sami's archenemy, Kate Roberts

after their failed date. The next day, Sami told EJ that she couldn't go out with him again, but that she still wanted to be friends. EJ appeared disappointed by Sami's decision.

Shortly thereafter, Sami's secret, that she blackmailed Dr. Lexie Carver to lie to Austin and her sister,Carrie, about their ability to conceive normal children together, was revealed when Lucas found a blackmail note that was intended for Sami. As a result, Sami became estranged from her family, her son Will disowned her, and Lucas and Will moved out of the apartment, leaving Sami on her own. At the same time, EJ was revealed (to the audience)to be Patrick Lockhart's boss and the mastermind behind the so-called "gloved hand" crimes that had rocked Salem over the previous few months.

Sami informed EJ that her terrible secret had been revealed and that she'd been abandoned by practically everyone close to her. EJ comforted her and took her home with him, but nothing happened between them that night. The following morning, EJ told Sami that he adored all parts of her, both bad and good, and that, to him, she was perfect just as she was. They kissed and then began making out on the couch, but were interrupted. Later, Sami and EJ had a romantic date at her apartment and started making out, but were once again interrupted - this time by Lucas and Will. EJ, irritated by the interruption, asked Sami to choose between him or Lucas and Will. Sami asked EJ to leave and he obliged, warning her that Lucas and Will would only hurt her again.

Meanwhile, the authorities are onto EJ and Bo asked Sami about him. Sami, curious about what the police wanted with him, paid EJ a visit to ask him. EJ was evasive and rushed her out of the apartment, but not before Sami discovered a woman's bra tucked into the couch cushions and realized that EJ's had been having sex with Kate Reed. When EJ subsquently showed up at Sami's apartment to ask her why she hadn't been returning his phone calls, she, along with her boyfriend Lucas, confronted him about his affair with Kate and she told him that she doesn't want anything more to do with him.

She then found out that he has been hiding his true identity as a DiMera since he came to town. Following the breakup, EJ makes some horrible decisions that end up hurting Sami, and one such mistake happens on December 29, 2006. In the course of the story, Sami and Lucas end up in a cabin in the woods. A ceiling beam falls on Lucas, and Sami leaves the cabin to go look for help. When Sami reaches the main road, she foolishly jumps into the first car that passes by. The driver is EJ, who needs her help getting through a police roadblock. He forces her at gunpoint to get him through the roadblock and then wants Sami to leave so that he can escape to Mexico. She refuses to get out of the car and pleads for his help in saving the life of Lucas, saying that she will do anything to get him to help her. EJ agrees on one condition — Sami has sex with EJ. Sami agrees in order to save Lucas. EJ then goes to help Sami move the beam off of Lucas.
2007
In 2007, after that day, EJ torments Sami with the truth about the night on the country road even after he discovers that Sami is pregnant, possibly with his child. Celeste, Lexie's mother, learns of what happened between Sami and EJ and convinces Sami, that she needs to kill EJ. Celeste helps her put it together, drugging EJ with special lipstick, and burning down the cabin where they meet, the same cabin that had trapped Lucas. Sami is unable to go through with killing a human being, but the building goes up in flames anyway. It's later revealed that EJ had blackmailed Celeste into convincing Sami to kill him, and was party to the whole thing. Eventually, the truth comes out, and viewers start to see a gradual yet seemingly sincere change in EJ as he realizes the magnitude of what he did and the pain that he caused Sami. EJ apologizes for what he did on several occasions, and later refers to what he did as vile and inhuman. He does use the word "rape" in one of his apologies, finally acknowledging the truth of what happened that night. He does everything he can to earn back Sami’s trust and he saves her life on several occasions.

Later, EJ and Sami scheme together, and it seems as though EJ is being redeemed.[1] Sami is shown to trust him a little bit more than she did before, although she does not forgive him for what he did. The possibility that she may forgive him lingers.[3] The origin of the DiMera vendetta against the Bradys, said to have begun with a forbidden affair between Santo DiMera and Colleen Brady, who, as fate would have it, look exactly like EJ and Sami respectively, begins to reveal itself.

On June 29, 2007, EJ is informed that he is the father of Sami Brady's twins. However, during the same episode, it is revealed that the DNA test was never actually done because Kate blackmailed Nick Fallon, the lab tech, who was supposed to run the test. Eventually, Nick had the test run and a current test result indicates Lucas Roberts is the father of the twins, not EJ.

Sami remains conflicted about her feelings for EJ, and while giving him CPR after he is electrocuted in a steam room, she kisses him. Later this same week, she and EJ read some of the Santo and Colleen love letters while lying in her hospital bed together. EJ points out many similarities between himself and Sami and Santo

, but Sami does not agree that there are any similarities between them. When they finish reading the letters, EJ once again declares his love for Sami and challenges her to admit that she has feelings for him. After a nurse gives Sami some medication to make her sleep, EJ kisses her. She gets caught up in the kiss but then realizes what she is doing and yells at EJ to get out of her room. She throws a flower vase at his head as he leaves.

Once the terms for ending the Dimera vendetta are revealed, that EJ and Sami must marry, EJ reminds Sami what is at stake if they don't marry. When Sami decides not to go through with the terms, EJ points out that her son may be in danger. Rather than go after Will to prove his point, EJ decides to set his sights on Sami's sister Belle Black
Belle Black
Isabella "Belle" Brady is a fictional character on the U.S. daytime television drama Days of our Lives. The only child of supercouple John Black and Marlena Evans, she is also one half of the supercouple Shawn Brady and Belle Black...

. Before executing any plan to harm or scare Belle, Sami calls EJ to come to the pub and, again, discuss their possible marriage and her annulment from Lucas. Shortly thereafter, while EJ is with Sami at the pub, Sami's stepfather, John Black, is killed in a hit-and-run. Sami assumes that John was killed because of her decision not to marry EJ, which EJ uses to his advantage to blackmail Sami into marrying him. Sami quickly reverses her decision and agrees to divorce Lucas and marry EJ.

On October 23, 2007, Sami gives birth to her twins at Marlena's house with only Lucas by her side. Lucas has handcuffed EJ to a pole at the pub to keep him from being at the birth. EJ eventually frees himself and arrives at Marlena's house. Immediately he comments that the twins look as though they could have different fathers.

After some convincing, Sami agrees to have a new DNA test done on the twins. While the DNA test is being performed, Sami leaves for Santo Domingo to divorce Lucas and leaves the twins with Steve Johnson and Kayla Brady. EJ learns, before Sami, that he is the father of John Roman and wants to see his son, but he is prevented from doing so even after getting a court order stipulating that he has the right to see his son and take temporary custody.

After Sami and Lucas return from Santo Domingo, EJ stops by Sami and Lucas' apartment and explains that he has made arrangements for he and Sami to marry the following night. Sami protests but eventually agrees. EJ then insists on seeing his son, once again producing the court order. Sami begins to protest EJ's involvement with his son again, citing that little Johnny needs to be with his twin sister. EJ tries to understand, but wants to see his son. The two continue their discussion until Lucas departs. Once Lucas is gone, Sami allows EJ to hold his son at which point EJ agrees to let Johnny stay with Sami until she goes to live with him after they marry. On November 8, 2007, Sami and EJ are married. As Father Kelly pronounces them "husband and wife", three gun shots are heard. EJ is struck in the back by one of the bullets and when he is able to speak, he weakly comments that he can not feel his legs. Sami holds vigil at the hospital with Stefano. Later, Stefano tells EJ that he is paralyzed and they don't know if it is permanent or not. EJ is devastated. Sami arrives at the hospital in time to silently witness EJ crying in Stefano's arms.

On December 20, Lucas reveals to Kate that he hired a nurse to watch Johnny and Allie and went to the church, got his gun, and shot EJ. On December 21, 2008 Sami leaves EJ and tells him she wants a divorce. On December 24, EJ prays to God, "I want to know what it's like to love somebody without any conditions, to love them truly and not for myself. I want to know what it's like to feel that love. Please just give me another chance with Samantha and I promise you I will be a changed man." Lucas confesses and is sent to prison for shooting EJ in the back on December 31. EJ makes a full recovery.
2008
On January 11, EJ turns on his father when he tells Sami, Marlena, Bo and Hope that John is not dead but being held by Stefano. As a result, both EJ and Sami go into witness protection to hide from Stefano. Still married, EJ and Sami plan to get a divorce when EJ discovers that he might be deported back to England. Sami and EJ decide to move in together to prove to the immigrations officer that they are a loving family so that EJ will be able to stay in the country. Though it eventually comes to light that this was all an elaborate ruse orchestrated by EJ to maintain the status quo with Sami and the children, EJ is extremely moved to overhear Sami tell the imposter immigration officer that he would be lucky if he was ever able to find someone who “loves him half as much as EJ loves me”. During this time, EJ, law degree in hand, and with a renewed interest in turning over a new leaf as a loving husband and father, joins Mickey Horton's firm. He takes on his first case, despite John and Sami’s objections, representing Sami’s longtime rival, Nicole Walker.

On May 15, 2008, EJ and Sami hash out their feelings over what happened the night Johnny was conceived after deciding to deal with the issues they’ve had between them in the past head-on. Sami declared that it was time that the slate between them should finally be wiped clean. EJ asks Sami if she can really put the night of Johnny’s conception behind them, and Sami firmly says that she can and will. After their conversation is interrupted by a very tipsy Nicole barging into the mansion and demanding to see EJ, jealousy rears its ugly head and, after physically throwing her romantic rival out the door, Sami pulls EJ into a fierce kiss. This inevitably leads to the couple making love on May 18th. Due to a misunderstanding, Lucas is released from prison early and, despite having told Sami that she should move on, is livid when he discovers her in bed with EJ. When Sami chases after Lucas, EJ overhears her desperately trying to convince him that their night together didn’t mean anything. Lucas doesn’t buy it, telling her he’s always suspected that Sami had feelings for EJ, despite her continual denial, and tells Sami things are over between them.

Sami and EJ’s marriage is eventually annulled, but not before EJ begs Sami to be honest with him and finally admit that she has feelings for him. She tearfully admits that she does. Eventually, EJ tries to move on with Nicole, but it is clear from the start that his feelings for Sami are still as intense as ever when he calls out her name while having sex with Nicole in an elevator during a power outage. The encounter leaves Nicole pregnant. At approximately the same time, Sami finds out she is also pregnant with EJ’s child but decides to keep the information to herself, jealous of EJ and Nicole’s burgeoning relationship. EJ eventually expresses to Sami that he wants to move on because he’s tired of Sami giving him the run-around, and because he wants to start a family and believes that Nicole is as close as he’ll ever get to his longtime wish. Sami continues to keep her pregnancy a secret, despite Lucas insisting that Sami tell “the man she loves” that she’s going to have his baby.

Sami makes an attempt to tell EJ about her pregnancy on October 17th. While standing on the DiMera mansion’s doorstep, Sami spies EJ and Nicole together through the window. It is never made clear whether or not Sami would have actually gone ahead with telling EJ about the pregnancy despite seeing them together because moments later, Sami inadvertently witnesses Salem’s mayor being assassinated.

Following the mayor’s assassination, EJ rescues Sami from a sniper, after which she reluctantly agrees to go into the Witness Protection program. Sami is devastated that she has to leave her children behind, and is heartbroken when she is told that, as a safety precaution, she isn’t allowed to even bring pictures of the kids with her. EJ, however, manages to slip pictures of Johnny and Allie into her luggage when no one is looking.

Sami and EJ, despite being separated, still show signs of longing for each other. When Sami reads an announcement in the paper of EJ and Nicole’s engagement, she imagines herself in Nicole’s place. Meanwhile, EJ dreams about waking up with Sami, and can’t help his disappointment when he realizes he’s waking up beside Nicole instead.
2009 - 2010
After having a miscarriage, Nicole, having discovered that Sami is carrying EJ’s child, fakes the third trimester of her pregnancy by wearing a rubber baby belly, believing that the only thing keeping EJ from pursuing Sami again is the child he thinks Nicole is still carrying. She makes a deal with Mia, a pregnant teenaged girl, to take the infant once it’s born and raise it as her own. Nicole ends up making the decision to switch Mia’s baby with Sami’s, believing that despite the deception, she’s giving EJ the gift of raising his own child – something Sami wasn’t willing to give him. The baby switch is a success, with Sami bringing home baby Grace (giving her the middle name “Rafaella” after her new lover, FBI agent Rafe Hernandez), and Nicole bringing EJ and Sami’s daughter back to the mansion, naming her Sydney.

Sami, in the meantime, lies to EJ once again by telling him that Grace is a child she decided to adopt. EJ expresses confusion as to why Sami would adopt a child when she already has three that she was forced to leave behind when she went into witness protection. Sami, still obstinately holding onto her secret, reacts with anger, telling EJ to stay out of her life. In the meantime, Rafe decides to go along with Sami’s plan to have him illegally adopt Grace, making him the baby’s father in EJ’s place, though this plan never ends up coming to fruition. On June 3rd Grace is rushed to the hospital, and on June 9th, she dies from complications of meningitis. Sami, devastated by the death of the baby she believed was her biological daughter, lashes out at EJ, finally coming clean about hiding the pregnancy from him. EJ, hurt beyond measure that Sami would purposely keep his child from him, spitefully only telling him about her existence after it was too late for him to ever know her, responds in kind. After an emotional explosion at the funeral home, EJ serves Sami with custody papers, intending to keep her out of Johnny’s life forever. Soon after, EJ becomes enraged when he discovers that the headstone Sami and Rafe arranged for Grace’s burial plot bears the name “Grace Rafaela Brady”. After destroying it, believing it to be yet another symbol of Sami’s lack of remorse for keeping his child from him, EJ immediately has it replaced with one that reads “Grace DiMera”.

Eventually, tensions begin to ease between the two with the help of a guilt-stricken Nicole. Sami finally begins to show some remorse for her actions, and EJ reveals to Lexie that he still has feelings for Sami, despite how she’s acted towards him.

On November 6, 2009, EJ asks Sami to visit Grace's grave with him. Sami shares her pregnancy story, and then apologizes to EJ about not telling him about Grace, asking him for forgiveness. After comforting each other at Grace’s gravesite, EJ leaves Sami, but not before giving her a kiss on the cheek. Sami becomes flustered and blushes after the show of affection.

EJ and Sami soon find themselves on the same side when the details of the baby switch are finally revealed, and they discover that Nicole has had their biological daughter this entire time. EJ quickly turns on both Nicole and his father when he discovers that Stefano also knew about the baby-switch, but helped Nicole keep it a secret, motivated by his intense desire to keep “that Brady bitch” out of his son’s life. Finding himself a victim of betrayal yet again proves to be the last straw for EJ.

In a grand act of revenge, EJ orchestrates Sydney’s kidnapping to punish everyone around him. His original plan is to leave the country with Johnny and Sydney in tow, and never look back, however his accomplice, sister-in-law Anna DiMera, is able to see long before EJ can, that he’s still in love with Sami, and tries to convince him that he’s making a huge mistake. After things escalate to the point where he fakes Sydney’s death to emotionally destroy Sami, he changes his mind about leaving the country at the last minute, showing up at the Brady Pub with Sydney in hand. Sami is overjoyed to have her daughter back, and she and EJ seem to be back on a road to recovery.

Sami and EJ grow closer over the summer of 2010, and Sami eventually moves into the DiMera mansion with the children. She and Rafe had grown distant over the course of the kidnapping ordeal, and Sami found herself once again being drawn to EJ. After a heated kiss with EJ on July 8th, Sami tries to run away from her feelings for him once again, but EJ isn’t having it this time. When Sami asks EJ if he still wants her, he replies, “Yes, I do. And I think that if you’re honest with yourself you’ll admit that you want me, too.”

On July 29th, EJ brings up the topic of marriage to a shocked Sami. “I’ll take your hand, I’ll look you in the eye, and I’ll kneel in front of you. I’ll look up at you, and I’ll have this thought that’ll run straight through my head about how I’m kneeling in front of my past, and how, if you’ll have me, I’ll rise to greet my future. And then I’ll tell you how much I love you, how much I’ve always loved you, and how I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”

EJ officially proposes to Sami on July 30th, but she expresses doubts that she’s ready to make such a commitment so soon after they’ve reconciled, and so soon after her break-up with Rafe. Though Sami believes she’s still in love with Rafe, after much thought and consideration, and moved by EJ’s sincerity, Sami accepts his proposal.

Throughout the summer, EJ goes to great lengths to keep the secret behind Sydney’s kidnapping safely hidden from Sami. Nicole ends up recording a conversation between EJ and Stefano during which he confesses to staging the kidnapping, and blackmails him with it. Rafe, intent on “opening Sami’s eyes”, gets some hints from Victor Kiriakis on how to get on Nicole’s good side by feeding her insecurities over the abuse she suffered at the hands of her father. He tricks her into thinking he wants to sleep with her, and manages to get his hands on the CD containing EJ’s confession. Rafe shows up at the mansion in time to stop Sami and EJ’s wedding, and a heartbroken Sami leaves a devastated EJ at the altar, packing up the children and moving them all out of the mansion that same afternoon.

Later that night, a drunk and suicidal EJ passes out in Sami’s old bedroom clutching a family picture Johnny drew for him in one hand and a gun in the other. During an alcohol-induced tirade earlier on the evening, EJ swore to Stefano that he’d take the children and leave town. Kate called Sami to warn her of EJ’s plan, insisting, though, that EJ was in no state to put his plan into motion that night because he was in rough shape. Still, Sami snuck out of Rafe’s bed, got dressed, and headed to the DiMera mansion to confront EJ. Finding him passed out on the bed, Sami is about to turn and leave when her feelings of being betrayed by EJ overwhelm her. She grabs the gun from EJ’s hand, aims it at his head, and pulls the trigger. She slips back into bed beside Rafe before he even realizes she was gone.

EJ manages to survive, but lingers at death’s door. Sami, who discovers she’s been put in charge of EJ’s medical decisions according to his living will, debates whether or not she should pull the plug on him. On September 9th, 2010, she sees EJ for the first time since the shooting, though he’s unconscious and being kept alive by life support. EJ responds to the sound of her voice, opening his eyes for the first time since arriving at the hospital. On September 17th, EJ takes a turn for the worst and Sami is faced with the difficult decision of whether or not to take EJ off of life support. To gain some closure, and aid in her decision, Sami, alone in EJ’s room, tries to come to terms with everything that’s happened over the past few weeks. She tells EJ that she has both loved and hated him, “sometimes at the same time”, and later admits to Lexie that she was in love with EJ but claims that those feelings are “gone forever”.

EJ eventually recovers, shocking everyone by beginning to breathe on his own after he is taken off life support. On October 14th, EJ admits to Stefano that he still loves Sami, and that he believes that if she was indeed the one who shot him, he got what he deserved. Eventually, though, EJ sets out to prove that Sami was the shooter, as it becomes clear to him that it’s the only way that he will ever be able to see his children again.
