Diego Rodríguez Porcelos (reigned 873 – c. 885), son and successor of Rodrigo
, count of Castile, was the repopulator of Burgos
and Ubierna. He did not succeed his father in Álava
, however; that went to Vela Jiménez.
He confronted a large Arab
army trying to annex the valley of the Ebro
from his base in Pancorbo
and he created a defensive line along the river Arlanzón
. It also appears he restored the episcopal see of Oca
(ancient Auca).
His date and place of death are not agreed upon by the chronicles, though 885 is most probably. Some place his death at Cornudilla, in the vicinity of Burgos, though his body was found, it is said, in the church of San Felices de Oca (modern Villafranca Montes de Oca). After his death, Castile was divided into many counties until 932.
In the Plaza de San Juán de Burgos, there is an equestrian statue in his honour, and another sixteenth century one in the Arco de Santa María in the same city.
