Gameplay

The aim of play is to win the race while destroying the fellow racers' cars. Players receive points based on the amount of damage they do to other cars, then receive a score multiplier at the end of the game based on their standing in the race. In addition to the normal amounts of points, two high-point hits ("Death From Above" and "T-Boned") not only merit a large number of points but destroy the victim's car.

There are a large number of cars to choose from in the game, and the models are based on various actual cars, although no authentic names were used. Players can choose from a limited number of insignias and paint patterns to customize their car, and also have access to a full RGB palette

. In certain modes, coins can be collected on the track which the player can then use to further customise their car with upgrades. Such upgrades are not available in multiplayer, or when not playing these specific modes.

Those who complete the five "Circuit" modes also unlock a number of unusual minigames, one of which ('Big Car Hunter') can be played using a light gun

, one of only 2 American release games which worked with the official Sega (European/Asian-only release) light gun. Each Circuit mode had its own tracks and cars, and the computer's cars were chosen from the same "class" as that which the player was allowed to choose from.
