Early life

Sadananda Gowda was born in 1953 to Venkappa Gowda and Kamala of Mandekolu Village in Sulya taluk. The family belongs to the Tulu Gowda

Gowda graduated in Science from the St. Philomena College, Puttur and then went on to obtain his degree in law at Udupi Vaikunta Baliga College of Law. He became active in student politics during this period and was elected as the General Secretary of the Students Union of the Law College. In 1976, he started practicing law at both Sulya and Puttur. He was a public prosecutor for a brief period in Sirsi in Uttara Kannada district but resigned his job to concentrate on his political career.

Political career

He began his political career as a member of the erstwhile Jan Sangh, was President of the party's Sulya Assembly segment, Dakshina Kannada BJP Yuva Morcha President, Dakshina Kannada BJP Vice-President, State BJP Yuva Morcha Secretary (1983-88), State BJP Secretary (2003-04) and National Secretary of the party (2004).

Gowda was elected to the state Legislative Assembly in 1994 and 1999 from the Puttur Assembly seat in Dakshina Kannada. He became Deputy Leader of the Opposition in his second term as MLA. He has served in various committees of the State legislature including the Cell for preparing Draft Bill on prohibiting Atrocities on Women, Karnataka, the Committee of Energy, Fuel and Power, and the Committee for Public Undertaking. He was nominated as the President of the Public Accounts Committee in 2003.

 by a margin of 32,314 votes. In 2009, the party shifted him to the Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency.. In parliament, he is on the Committee on Science & Technology, Environment & Forests. In the 14th Lok Sabha, he was a member of the Committee on Commerce.

He is married to Datty Sadananda and has a son, Karthik Gowda( An engineering graduate from Nitte Engineering College). His elder son, Kaushik Gowda, who was a medical student, died in a road accident near Puttur in 2003.

As MLA

D. V. having conntested as a candidate in the year 1989, got elected as MLA in the year 1994. Again he retained his seat in 1999. During his second stint he became the Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. During his tenure as MLA fie held different positions such as,
Member of the Cell for preparing Draft Bill on prohibiting Atrocities on Women, Karnataka.
Member of the Committee of Energy, Fuel and Power formed by the speaker of the Legislative Assembly in the year 2001-02.
Member of the Committee for Public Undertaking in the year 2002-03 and in the year 2003-04. He was nominated as the President of the Public Accounts Committee.
He had distributed more than 3,500 Ashraya Houses in his tenure as the Chairman of Ashraya Samithi.
And also he had sanctioned more than 17,000 files to the applicants in his position as the Chairman of Akrama-Sakrama Samithi.
Puttur Taluk, Panchayath had ‘won the first place in development ‘works in the state revel during B.J.P Administration under his guidance.
A new feather was added to his cap when he led an agitation for support price of Areca.

As MP

D.V.’s perserverance finally paid rich dividends. When he got elected as Member of Parliament and also, he is identified as the national leader when he was presented with the responsibility of National Secretary of Bharathiya Janata Party, after he was elected as Member of Parliament. He was given the responsibility to manage the Party Matters relating to Goa State. Govt of India had appointed him as Director of Coffee Board during January 2005. And the BJP made him the State President for Karnataka State during March 2006. His work in bringing unity in the party made him re-elected and took over the charge of State President of BJP during March 2007.
He is interested in Yakshagana, Folk Arts of Dakshina Kannada and also in Shuttle Badminton and Tennis.
