 of three months or less, the committed dose is approximately equal to the annual dose. For radionuclides with longer half lives, the committed dose represents dose delivered during the year of intake as well as in the future. Unless otherwise stated, CEDE is the total dose accumulated over 50 years for occupationally exposed workers or 70 years for the general public.

Depending on the context, it can also refer to the radiation dose of a particular organ rather than the whole body.
